If You Want to Buy a Car then Have Your Paperwork Ready

It isn’t too difficult to buy a car, you will just need to make sure that you have all the paperwork ready so there are no delays in the transaction. However, do you know what documents you will need? The majority of people don’t know what documents they need for buying a car or starting the sales process.

Here are the three documents you need to start the sales process at a dealership.

Your SA ID

Your SA ID is the first document you need as this shows that you are, who you say you are. You can use your smart ID or your green barcoded ID.

If you are a foreign national in South Africa, then you will need to provide your ID from your country as well as the relevant work permit or visa.

Proof of Where You Live

Once you show that you are who you say you are, the next document is proof of where you live or a proof of residence. You can use a utility bill or a document similar to this, which has been mailed to your residential address.

It would be unlikely that you don’t have proof of residence, but in the case that you don’t have any bills then you can use your rental agreement.

Proving You Make Money

As you will be buying a car, you will need to show that you can afford it.

The last piece of paperwork you will need is proof of income or employment.

If you are employed full time, you can use your payslip as proof, but if you are self-employed, you can use your last few months of bank statements, which show you receive a regular income.

After Submitting The Documents

Once, the dealership has your documents they can determine how much you can afford and the monthly instalment that you can pay.

A dealership does offer finance and their finance team will send your documents to one of the financial institutions to see if you qualify for vehicle finance.

If you prefer, you can secure vehicle finance from your bank or other financial institution. Finance from a dealership is usually more expensive and you might get a better interest rate from your bank.

Another option is to apply for pre-approved vehicle finance. This means you are approved, before buying a car, for a certain amount.

Having your paperwork ready to go will speed up the car buying process and you will be sitting in the driver’s seat in no time.
