Not Knowing What You Want

Before you start shopping, you first need to figure out what it is you want. There are many different types of cars with different trim levels and so on, so you can’t just buy the first used car you see.

You will need to determine what it is you will be using the car for. Do you need a small run around to get you from A-B?Do you need an SUV for your family? Do you need a bakkie to transport goods? Knowing how you will be using a car will determine the type of car you need.

Once you know what type of car you need or don’t want, you then need to start delving deeper into makes, models and trim levels.  It is a good idea to do some research online to look at various cars, what they offer and the price they are going for. Look for online reviews about different cars and so on.

Having a good idea of what you want will take the pressure off when you start shopping for a used car.

Don’t Just Look at Used Car Dealers Close By

You will be limiting your options if you choose to only look for a used car within your area. You should cast the net a bit wider to find the car you want.

It is a good idea to browse listings on car selling websites as often these will list used cars available from dealers in your area and a bit further afield. Finding that perfect used car won’t be easy, but searching, browsing and not being worried about travelling a bit further could mean you could get behind the wheel of your dream car.

Don’t Wait till You Are Ready to Buy to Consider How You’ll Pay

You will need to have a budget in mind and through your research, you should have a good idea of how much cars you are interested in cost. Whilst, you can find a few bargains here and there, you should have a good idea of how much cars cost.

Based on your research, you can come to a reasonable budget. Always take some time to become familiar with how much cars cost.

If you have the cash to buy a car then that’s great, but many of us won’t have that option, which means we will need to look at financing. You should try and get pre-approved for a loan, so you know more or less what you can spend on a car.

If you do have some cash saved up then you can use this as a deposit and finance the remainder of the purchasing price. A deposit will bring down your monthly instalments, making the car purchase more affordable.

Don’t Buy Without Having a Test Drive and an Inspection

You should never buy a car without test driving it first. A test drive will reveal a lot about the vehicle. Also, you need to make sure that it is the right vehicle for you.

If you have found the car you want, don’t buy it without having a mechanic look over it first. Used cars may have one or two minor issues or they may get a major issue in the future, however, don’t let a couple of issues put you off. You want to try and avoid used cars that have multiple impending issues on the horizon.

Another thing that you should do is get a vehicle history report or HPI. This report will tell you the history of the vehicle, accident history, finance history and so on.

Buying a car is a fun experience, but when buying a used car, practice some caution, do your research and ensure that the car you are buying is in sound condition.
