January 7, 2021

The time frame for you to renew your vehicle licences that expired between 26th March 2020 to 31st December 2020 has been extended once again to 31st August 2021. However, even though this comes as a relief to motorists, the long queues to get a new licence are putting many motorists off, but do you need to stand in a queue?

With the onset of Covid-19, many of us want to avoid busy places, which includes the licensing department. However, a third party is now allowed to get your vehicle licence for you. This service has been rolled out in the country and no matter who you are, you can use the service.

If you are living in Gauteng, the Free State or certain parts of the Western Cape then you can use ChatBack, which is a WhatsApp based service.

With ChatBack, you just need to send them your vehicle registration number, get a quote and pay. After which, you will need to give your address, attach a copy of your ID document and proof of residence. Then stay at home, relax and wait for the confirmation that your licence has been renewed.

The renewal is charged at R250 per vehicle, which includes paperless email delivery of your disc. You can also opt for home delivery in Gauteng or nationwide delivery to a Pargo Pickup, which is charged at R70 and R75 respectively.

If you are in the Western Cape then you have the option to pay for licences via the City of Cape Town eServices portal. You will just need to be registered and have a copy of your ID and proof of residence.

It’s easy enough to do as you just need to activate the vehicle licensing renewal option, fill in the information, get the City’s banking details and a specific deposit reference number. This will allow you to make a direct EFT payment.

If you are paying fora vehicle where you are not the registered owner then you will need to complete Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle Form, provide ID for yourself and the registered owner and have a letter of consent from the registered owner.

Either way, you should be applying for a vehicle licence renewal a month before yours expires. Once the payment has been received, you should receive your licence within 14 working days.

Avoid the queues, stay home, stay safe and renew your vehicle licence with ease.
