What do You Prefer…Manual or Automatic?

April 8, 2021

When you are shopping for a new car then you will have all sorts of questions, like do you want a petrol or diesel engine, do you want to sell or trade-in, what colour do you want and so on. One such question, you will probably ask yourself is whether you want a manual or an automatic gearbox.

So, what do you prefer? What is the best choice? Here are some factors you should consider when choosing between a manual and an automatic.

Is a Manual Better for You?

The first thing that you need to keep in mind is that you can do your licence in either manual or automatic. With a manual licence, you can drive both types of transmissions, but if you have opted to do your licence in automatic then you will be restricted to only driving automatic cars.

Cars with manual gearboxes are usually cheaper to buy than cars with automatic transmission. Also, the maintenance of an automatic gearbox is usually more expensive due to the complexities of the transmission. However, if the clutch goes on your manual car then it can be quite costly to repair.

Manual cars have a steeper learning curve and they take practice. They are also harder to drive for those that have a certain disability or reduced mobility.

A manual transmission generally weighs less, which means that these vehicles have better acceleration and lose less power than an automatic. Sports car drivers prefer a manual gearbox due to this.

You will also gain better control whilst driving. When slowing down, for instance, you can use the gears instead of the brakes.

Manual cars also have a fun factor when shifting gears up or down and many drivers enjoy this engagement with the vehicle.

What About an Automatic?

An automatic car is a lot easier to drive as you don’t need to worry about clutch control or changing gears as this is all done for you. Also, you can keep your hands on the wheel at all times.

When you hit traffic in a manual car, then there is a lot more effort involved, which is tiring. In an automatic, though you can easily move with the traffic, which is something to keep in mind if you travel a distance daily.

One of the most embarrassing things to happen to a driver is to stall at a green light, but with an automatic car, this rarely happens unless there is a mechanical fault.

Also, if you come up against a hill, then an automatic will have no issue handling it no matter how steep it is and the automatic transmission will do the work for you.

So What Should You Get?

This comes down to personal preference. Some drivers prefer manual gearboxes as they feel more part of the driving process and others prefer automatic because it is easier.

If you are on a budget, then you will find that manual cars are cheaper, but if you are looking for an easier ride then go for an automatic.
